1895, "Jefferson Davis," This beautiful engraving was published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated History of the Civil War in 1895. (Image: 9" wide x 10 1/2" high). This relief line engraving was printed from the original woodcut blocks which had been used to print the image when it was first published during the Civil War. On the reverse side is an engraved view of Confederate soldiers staging a night attack on the town of Salem, Missouri. The floral design around the portrait is comprised of sugar cane stalks, tobacco leaves, cotton balls and magnolia blossoms, all plants associated with the South. The caption beneath the engraving describes his birth in Todd County, Kentucky, his West Point education and his military and political career.
